DOUBLE MAJOR
Students in good academic standing (2.0 cumulative and current GPA) who have completed all of the preparation for both majors and at least 2 upper division courses for each major may apply to declare a double (or triple) major. Both majors must be in the College of Letters and Science.
With few exceptions, double majors in the same department are unacceptable. Students must designate one of the two majors as the primary major. No more than 20 upper division units may overlap between both majors. Upper division units required for the preparation for the major are not subject to this 20 unit restriction.
If you are looking to add a pre-major DO NOT submit this form, and instead, please connect with the department of the pre-major you are considering to inquire about declaring the pre-major.
If you are seeking to double major between a major within the College of Letters & Science with a program in another School (e.g. Engineering), please consult with the respective School about their policies and procedures. Such requests would be handled by the respective School, and your primary major will automatically be the one in the other School.
STEP 1
Download the Departmental Approval for Double Major/Minor form and Degree Plan Contract. Fill out the portions of the form that you are responsible for as the student:
- Departmental Approval for Double Major/Minor form and Degree Plan Contract : Fill out the “Student Information” located at the top of the form. For the Degree Plan Contract, outline your remaining program plan (quarter-by-quarter) to include your remaining University, College, and GE requirements – as well as the requirements for your intended majors, any minors, and remaining elective courses to fulfill the minimum unit requirements.
- Please see the Degree Plan Contract webpage for information on how to fill out your plan.
STEP 2
Meet with a departmental advisor from each major and minor that you are intending to pursue. The departmental advisor must fill out and sign the Departmental Approval for Double Major/Minor form and Degree Plan Contract. Together you should review your Degree Audit Report (DAR) and confirm your remaining requirements for each major. Departments should:
- Indicate the number of courses remaining to be completed for the major (including prerequisites);
- Note any substitutions/waivers of major requirements or prerequisites that have been approved but are not accurately reflected on the current DAR, as well as make corrections of any other errors;
- Identify courses that will overlap between both majors, confirming that no more than 20 upper division units will be overlapping between the two majors; and,
- sign the Degree Plan Contract and initial only the classes required to complete the necessary preparation and major requirements. Any additional classes, even if they are from the department, should not be initialed if not needed.
STEP 3
Confirm that you will be graduating on time (by Spring/Summer of your 4th year if you were a first year admit, or Fall of your 3rd year if you were a transfer admit). If you will be graduating on time, skip to STEP 4.
If you will need additional time beyond the Spring/Summer of your 4th year if you were a first year admit, or Fall of your 3rd year if you were a transfer admit, please submit your request to your College advising unit as a Time to Degree petition .
You will need to submit the Departmental Approval for Double Major/Minor form and Degree Plan Contract, along with an explanation of why additional time is needed.
STEP 4
If you will be graduating on time (by Spring/Summer of your 4th year if you were a first year admit, or Fall of your 3rd year if you were a transfer admit), please submit your request to your College advising unit below. Note that if you will not be graduating on time and submit your request as an on-time petition, it will be denied.
Please note that petitions are normally processed within 10-15 business days of submission. Students may check the status of their petition on MyUCLA via the “Academics” tab → “Petitions” after the petition has been processed.
