Transfer Course Credit Petitions
Students who wish to have transfer coursework applied toward a University, College or General Education (GE) requirement, may submit a petition for consideration. Transfer coursework constitutes as coursework that is/was taken elsewhere – a student cannot petition UCLA courses that are not on the already approved list for the College of Letters & Sciences–such petitions will be automatically denied.
A student may petition transfer coursework to be applied toward the following requirements:
- American History and Institutions
- Diversity
- Writing II
- Quantitative Reasoning
- College Foreign Language
- General Education Requirements
-
For more information about the different GE areas, please see
https://registrar.ucla.edu/academics/ge-requirement for descriptions of each area.
-
Students are encouraged to meet with a College academic advisor to review and discuss transfer course/s that would best apply toward unsatisfied University/College requirements. Students wishing to satisfy major or minor requirements with transfer course credit should consult their respective departments. Students wishing to satisfy the Entry Level Writing or Writing I requirements should consult the Writing Programs Office .
If you are a new student in the coming Fall quarter, please note that petitions cannot be considered until you have attended a New Student Session offered by New Student Academic Programs .
Petitions can be submitted for classes previously taken or for classes you plan to take in the future. These requests require a digital copy of the course syllabus from the term the course is taken. If the syllabus is not available, the committee may also accept a syllabus for the course from another term, the course description taken from the General Catalog, the course reading list, and/or the course learning objectives. Please be sure you have electronic copies (e.g. PDF or Word documents) to submit with your request.
Notes:
- Students wishing to satisfy major or minor requirements with transfer course credit should consult their respective departments. Students wishing to satisfy the Entry Level Writing or Writing I requirements should consult the Writing Programs Office .
- Students who are not in the College of Letters & Science should consult with their own School for procedures on petitioning requirements.
Transferology
Prior to submitting your petition, please refer to Transferology to see if the course you wish to petition has already been articulated for credit or reviewed. If a course is listed as approved for a requirement on the Transferology database, you will not be required to submit a petition. Once you have completed the course, send an official transcript from the other institution to UCLA – once received, it will automatically be applied to the requirement it has been approved for.
College Advising Transfer Course Credit Database
If the course you wish to complete is not listed in Transferology, please refer to the College Advising Transfer Course Credit Database to see if it has been approved or denied by petition. If the course is listed in the database, please confirm the requirement for which it has been approved or denied. Please note you must be logged into your g.ucla.edu account to access the database.
If a course is “approved” for a requirement, upon receipt of an official transcript, the course should automatically be applied to the requirement it has been approved for. If for some reason the course does not automatically apply, please submit a Transfer Course Credit petition. Courses that are listed as being denied for a requirement, will not be reviewed; thus, please do not submit a petition as it will be denied.
Unlisted courses in the database, and thus submitted for transfer credit review, have no guarantees of petition approval.
Please note that due to limited staffing the College does not have the resources to review excessive petition requests. Thus, we ask that students be intentional and only submit a petition for a course that they are seriously considering or are able to enroll in. Students are limited to 5 submissions in a 30 day period. Should a student submit more than 5 petitions at any point within a 30 day period, their petitions will not be reviewed.
If a student would like guidance in narrowing down their submissions, we strongly encourage they consult with an academic advisor in their College advising unit prior to submitting their petition(s).

- To support you as you navigate your course search, we encourage you review the UCEAP Course Catalog . Through this catalog, you can browse courses that UC students have previously taken, determine the number of UC units a course carries, and if the course is considered upper and lower division.
- In terms of academic and transfer credit, students can explore the guidelines and procedures outlined on the IEO’s website: Academics & Credit Transfer . For specific inquiries about transfer coursework for University, College, or General education requirements, it is recommended that you consult with your College Advising unit.
