SWITCHING TO THE COLLEGE OF LETTERS & SCIENCE
In order to switch into the College from one of UCLA’s professional schools (Engineering, Arts & Architecture, Theater, Film & Television, Music, Nursing, Education & Information Studies, Luskin School of Public Affairs. Fielding School of Public Health), a student must have completed at least 12 units in a regular term and be in good academic standing with a cumulative and term GPA of 2.0 or higher, and be able to complete their degree requirements within normative time to degree.
If a student wishes to declare a major in the College but are currently not in the College, they must first obtain the approval from their requested major department.
Please note that if you are already in the College of Letters & Science, you do NOT need to submit this form. To change your major within the College, speak directly to the departmental advisor for your intended major.
Requests to change into the UCLA College for the current quarter must be received by Friday of Week 4 of the current quarter. Requests submitted after Week 4 will be processed, however the change will go into effect the following quarter.
Please note that this process is only for students who are NOT currently in the College and would like to change into the College.
STEP 1
Schedule an appointment and meet with a College Academic Mentor or Academic Advisor in College Academic Counseling to discuss College specific requirements.
STEP 2
Speak with a departmental advisor for the major that you wish to complete regarding courses and eligibility requirements.
If you have completed 6 academic terms, or 150 units (including AP/IB units), or a transfer admit, you must fill out a Degree Plan Contract signed by the prospective department, even if you are not yet eligible to be admitted to the major. Please note that the Degree Plan Contract only indicates what courses would be required to complete those programs if admitted and does not guarantee admission; each department and program has its own eligibility requirements. If you have not completed 6 academic terms and are below 150 units, you do not need to submit a Degree Plan Contract.
STEP 3
Download and fill out the Program Change Petition .
- If you are eligible to be admitted into a major or pre-major, ask the department to approve your admission to the major or pre-major; otherwise, you may leave the major blank and request to switch as undeclared.
- If you are leaving the School of Arts and Architecture, Fielding School of Public Health, Luskin School of Public Affairs or Herb Alpert School of Music, you must also obtain an exit signature from the respective School on the Program Change Petition.
STEP 4
Confirm that you will be graduating on time (by Spring/Summer of your 4th year if you were a first year admit, or Fall of your 3rd year if you were a transfer admit). If you will be graduating on time, skip to STEP 5.
If you will need additional time beyond the Spring/Summer of your 4th year if you were a first year admit, or Fall of your 3rd year if you were a transfer admit, please submit your request to your College advising unit as a Time to Degree petition . You will need to submit the Program Change Petition and Degree Plan Contract, along with an explanation of why additional time is needed.
STEP 5
If you will be able to graduate on time, submit your petition to your advising unit below:
Note: Your advising unit is indicated in the upper right corner of your DARS. If your petition is submitted to the wrong unit, it will not be processed. Petitions normally take 10-15 business days to process.
